It’s hard to ‘like’ modern celebrities really. I guess unlike other’s who will do and say pretty much anything for attention, such as Jordan et al, you can’t help but feel sad for them. Not to mention the other people they seem to be happy to drag through the mud. I know people at Bristol Uni who have been shaken up by the negative press to she has attracted to her department, so I guess I am thinking of those people. Apparently the male students have been very unkind to Magnanti and there is a lot of tension among her colleagues about that. In truth I feel really bad for her as she will have to carry this for the rest of her life. No fun!

I have no idea why some women embelish their tales of their life in prostitution…it’s colourful enough. But I get a feeling Belle plays to the crowd.

Good analysis, I particularly liked this view “…the immediate consequence of which was lots of hacks implying that Ms Short is an unreliable and volatile witness.”

The hacks will never accept responsibility for what they did to sell the war to the British people. They are as guilty if not more so than the politicians, they supported the war to sell more newspapers. We’ve had hack revisionists, apologists but very, very few willing to accept their complicity in the ultimate war crime, the war of aggression. They know they are guilty and will do anything to try and hide their guilt.

Well, fess up, it will do you good in the end.

She needs to produce evidence form other prostitutes to verify that she really did do it. If she continues to brag to her colleagues at Bristol that she’s in it for a share of the movie rights and was talked into it by the real writer, reported to be a man, then why should we continue to believe her? It’s also been reported that she is simply not attractive enough to work in ‘high class’ prostitution… After having watched the interview with Billie, I’d have to agree with that!

A rare treat for toff-spotters - Webb’s cosy chat with the earl’s niece Harriett Harman about deepening social injustice under New Labour (Today 27.1.10) as detailed in the government’s Unequal Britain report.

Both were privately educated at schools which charge just under the national average wage a year. Who better to sound the death knell of class division and privilege?

I asked Today editor Dominic Groves how many of the Today team had been similarly compromised by toff-schooling but he refused to say and became overly defensive. A raw nerve?

Since the day Belle de Jour was published, people have been accusing the author of being a man, or at least a professional writer making it up. Dr. Magnanti comes out and we still have to doubt her story? What does the woman have to do to be believed, service a client for cash on national television? It’s incredibly common for students like Dr. Magnanti to work in the sex industry to support themeelves at uni - why do some find her story so hard to believe?

But the word is already out that this a hoax and Magnanti was having trouble securing funding as a scientist (apparently she is not really outstanding in her field) so she made up the whole thing to start a career as a novelist. The word from some source at Bristol University is that she based the book on conversations she had with the prostitutes her father introduced her to. So it’s all just a stunt.

Our budget deficit is nearly £200 billion for the year…the next Government must make dramatic cuts whether the Conservatives or Labour are elected. With growth of 0.1% in the last quarter, following 6 quarters of negative growth. McBroon’s claims that we would “lead the world out of the recession” & that we “were in the best position of the G20countries” are looking pretty hollow. How any one would trust him & Darling again beggers belief!
