Peter Mandelson famously called News International executives a "bunch of c****' when they tried to upstage Gordon Brown at the Labour Party conference by announcing their support for David Cameron's Tories. This rather personal observation clearly wouldn't have gone down well with recently-appointed News International supremo Rebekah Brooks. But she, or her minions, subsequently showed their lack of experience by being offended when the Labourites boycotted her party. Girls, girls! Anyway Mandelson wriggled off the hook, laughing up his Ozzie Boateng sleeve, by saying he'd actually said 'a bunch of chumps.' And the prince of darkness might be having another chortle as he sees shadow chancellor George Osborne saying he's going to increase the retirement age and impose a complete public sector pay freeze, while the economic pundits queue up to say this won't make a blind bit of difference to the national deficit. This, as all the political correspondents are saying, is a hell of a way to try to win an election. If Tory leader Cameron doesn't find pastures new for Osborne he could easily blow next year's poll.

So are the Tories ‘a bunch of chumps?’

I don’t know who Mr B gets his info from but the reviews in this morning’s newspapers are pretty positive about GO’s speech. Everyone knows that huge savings will have to be made in order to reduce our national debt. Labour Governments have always left the countries finances in ruin but Darling & Brown have really overdone it this time! We’ll here a lot more about cuts from Darling in the coming months that’s for sure.
