No wonder Ashley Cole’s miffed at his measly £70,000 at Chelsea, the Sun reports that skipper John Terry has been offered £300,000 a week (or £15.6m a year on a five-year contract) by Manchester City.
City manager Mark Hughes is splashing his Abu Dhabi owners’ cash of course and seems to think Terry (who’s not in the first flush of youth and has been somewhat injury-prone of late) is the key to busting into the Premiership top four, itself the key to Hughes keeping his job.
And while it’s amusing to see Roman Abramovitch’s Chelsea being outspent by the moneybags from Eastland, this sort of wage inflation is just barmy.
Is it too late to introduce a salary cap in football?
