Well the British and Irish Lions ignored the script (the one Mr Blatherskite, wrote for them predicting South Africa by 30 points). This time they got the break and the score they needed when Ugo Monye, the villain of the first test, intercepted to score under the posts when the Lions were looking tired and beginning to hoof the ball down the pitch and back to South Africa once again. Captain Paul O'Connell and fellow Irishman Jamie Heaslip played magnificently as did Martyn Williams, starting a Lions test at last. England (and New Zealand's) Rikki Flutey was outstanding in the backs along with his eventual replacement in the centre, scrum half Mike Phillips. Would the Springboks have made so many changes if the series had still been alive? Probably not, but 'what if' is a futile game at the best of times. Although there'll be an orgy of it in the papers tomorrow of course.

Lions gain richly-deserved win
