But before former London mayor (and still a would-be candidate) Ken Livingstone cheers too loudly Evening Standard reporter and columnist Andrew Gilligan is off to the Daily Telegraph - as London editor.
Andrew is certainly one to polarise opinion, he was the BBC’s defence correspondent before he antagonised Tony Blair spinmeister Alastair Campbell with his injudicious (for his career) ’sexing up’ reference to Campbell’s dodgy dossier on the case for going to war in Iraq.
He was one of a trio of departures as the establishment closed ranks in the Hutton Inquiry, taking with him BBC chairman Gavyn Davies and director general Greg Dyke.
He then went on to make Ken’s life a misery at the Standard, which under then editor Victoria Wadley was no fan of man of the people mayor Livingstone anyway.
Livingstone still blames Gilligan for doing him down and letting in Tory Boris Johnson.
London editor at the Telegraph is an interesting one, the first such appointment on a national paper as far as I can recall.
Boris can expect some severe scrutiny of course, which will be interesting as he’s still a Daily Telegraph columnist, boosting his coffers by £250,000 or so a year.
Will we have a battle between Andy and Boris on the Telegraph pages?

Gilligan scrutinize Boris? He didn’t before the election, why start now?
Yes indeed. While writing complete rubbish about Livingstone, Gilligan was embarrassingly in Johnson’s pocket. It is hardly surprisingly that these two ghastly characters are now sharing a paymaster.
