'Sir' Allen Stanford, the dodgy Caribbean-based financier who briefly became the best friend of English cricket, is also a big noise in polo. Stanford's teams have played in all the big tournaments and he's been a great supporter of polo causes (polo being a great magnet for rich people who think they can buy a bit of class). Mr Blatherskite was reminded of this today as he was leafing through the latest issue of Hurlingham, the very posh (and lively) magazine of the polo crowd published by polo supporter Roderick Vere Nicoll. There's an ad for for Stanford's financial services on the inside back cover (with a picture of Argentinian Basualdos knocking a ball around) saying, "hard work and clear vision are critical to succeeding in the sport of kings. The same applies in successful financial planning." Hope he paid up front, Rod.

Polo scores an own goal with Stanford
