Today's the ghastly Red Nose day, highlight of the BBC's Comic Relief charity fundraiser and some muppet had the bright idea of enlisting large comedienne Jo Brand for the Today programme. Brand was supposed to take over as 'continuity' announcer and at once proceeded to insult presenter Sarah Montague, saying she didn't need a false red nose because she drank so much. The well-bred Ms Montague, once the shock had worn off, tried to laugh (and failed). Fellow presenter 'posh' Ed Stourton swiftly moved on to the weather, remarking that there wasn't much 'comedy' in it (actually it's a nice day in London town but the Today weather forecast is always wrong). Even if Brand was funny, which she isn't, what's the ghastly woman doing on Today? Off with her nose! And ears.

No comic relief from Jo Brand

Was it meant to be funny or was it as personal as it sounded? I’m baffled and not laughing….

I have never found Jo Brand either talented or funny. She’s like one of those hangers on to the media industry, kept there while people try and work out what she’s about.

This morning’s attack on Sarah Montague was neither called for or appreciated by the R4 audience, especially when you consider her slot given was one for charity.

In light of what other TV personalities have acheived of late, e.g. climbing to the top of Kilimanjaro to riase awareness of the desperate need that Comic Relief seeks to aid, I’m sure many found Jo’s monologue low and shameful.

I wonder if Jo Brand could be prosecuted under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 for describing herself as a comedienne. Her inappropriate remarks made on air to Sarah Montague were a disgrace and, once again, revealed the spiteful and mean-spirited side of her personality. Who on earth at the BBC keeps inviting her back?

What a horrible moment this morning. She’s been getting arrogant and above herself lately. Nasty!
