The BBC is to run TV ads promoting presenter Nicky Campbell’s new Radio 5 phone-in at 9am, the second morning dose of Nicky for lucky listeners.
The bumptious former DJ and game show presenter has actually made quite a good fist of presenting 5’s morning 6-9 news programme with bright scouse underling Shelagh Fogarty (or maybe it’s just that he becomes less irritating over time).
But now he’s getting an extra hour in bed, joining Fogarty at seven, before doing the extra hour on the dog and bone.
Why this is necessary when they had Victoria Derbyshire (no, I can’t stand her either) doing a phone-in at nine is anyone’s guess. Unless it’s that Victoria wanted another hour in bed too (she now takes over the phone, after giving it a good wipe no doubt, at ten).
They do work hard though these 5 morning presenters.
Campbell and Fogarty do five days a week whereas the Today crowd on Radio 4 work a shift system, rotating John Humphrys, James Naughtie, Sarah Montague, Evan Davis and ‘posh’ Ed Stourton, who’s been on more than ever since he was officially sacked to make way for BBC North America editor Justin Webb who returns in the autumn.
Anyway, judging by the video in the link, Nicky Campbell on the phone surrounded by admirers is on a par with ‘zoo radio’ inventor Howard Stern’s US extravaganza (although one imagines the content is not quite so hot).
How long will it be before Nicky’s prog is streamed live on video over the internet?
