That’s the theory anyway, new Tory shadow business secretary Ken Clarke will hunt down and destroy government business secretary Lord Mandelson, who appears to be running the economy (possibly the country) in a way that seems to be resonating with the voters.
The trouble is, from the Tory point of view, that Mandelson is now in the Lords and so Ken won’t be able to beard him in debate (unless they both appear on the Today programme or Newsnight).
And Clarke (a former Tory chancellor of the exchequer) and Mandy are actually likely to agree on most things.
Not least the euro.
Clarke has lost two Tory leadership campaigns through his support for the euro (and indeed most things European) and Mandy, a former EU trade commissioner, is also an enthusiast, far more so than his boss Gordon Brown.
Both men almost certainly take the view that, whenever the UK emerges from recession, if it does, it would be better off in the same currency as fellow big beasts France and Germany. This is not a view shared by Tory leader David Cameron and shadow chancellor George Osborne (officially at least).
Shadow foreign secretary William Hague, who’s apparently unofficial number two to Cameron these days, has said recently that Britain will “never join the euro.”
So how will he get on with Ken?
