Kathy Staff, who played battleaxe Nora Batty in long-running BBC comedy Last of the Summer wine, has died at 80.
This leaves just Peter Sallis from the original cast as ’star’ of the show Bill Owen who played Compo died in 1999 aged 85 and Brian Wilde who played Foggy died earlier this year.
Actually Mr Blatherskite’s uncle thinks there was someone there before Wilde appeared as Foggy, but can’t remember whom.
Anyway Staff, who also appeared in other popular soaps like Coronation Street and Emmerdale made a very convincing old boot and Sallis, paying ‘tribute’ today observed that “I can’t say I actually loved her.”
He probably didn’t love Owen much either, who was one of those hyper-aggressive Northern comedians who used to go into battle with their audiences and prospered mightily on the back of it.
Compo and Nora probably deserved each other. Wonder if they did?
