Peter Lewis, director of children’s services in Enfield, North London, has been cherrypicked to replace Sharon Shoesmith, controversial former head of Haringey children’s services, scene of the Baby P tragedy.
Children’s secretary Ed Balls’ instant inquiry into Haringey which resulted in Shoesmith’s effective dismissal was led by John Coughlan, director of children’s services for Hampshire and an old mucker of Lewis who had the job before moving to Enfield.
Lewis, who has earned mixed notices in Enfield, will be hoping against hope that there are no other nasties in Haringey’s cupboard.
