Will Fergie stay on for ever?

Sir Alex Ferguson told the Telegraph today that retirement was not on his mind - at all - despite many previous hints that he would go in 2001 or 2005 and when he was 70, or whenever.

But the old boy has won 22 trophies in 22 years at Manchester United and he has a good chance of adding to this as strongest rivals Chelsea are wobbling, Liverpool, the current Premiership leaders, still look a bit short and Arsenal could be out of things if they lose to Chelsea tomorrow.

As for the other European contenders in the Champion’s League, only Barcelona look strong enough to contest another English royal progress to the final.

Some in Europe, in particular UEFA boss Michel Platini, would say that this is because the English clubs have borrowed mind-boggling amounts of money to fuel their progress; incontestable when you consider that United’s owners the Glazer clan owe £850m and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovitich has ‘loaned’ the club nearly £600m.

But this won’t bother Fergie as long as he can still buy whoever catches his eye for the odd £30m.

Manchester United has probably the strongest squad of any football club in the world so Fergie could well end up with another Premiership title and European Cup this season.

So there are no clouds on his horizon, until the administrators come calling.
