Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has been crocked in training for England’s friendly match against Germany, an accident that is bound to lead to more opposition from Premiership managers to risking their valuable properties in meaningless matches.
Nobody disputes the need for a few friendlies, in the summer for example with World Cup and European Championship matches coming up in September, but it’s much harder to see a justification for having them in the November when the next competitive matches aren’t until March.
The main reason we have them, although not a justification, is the need for national associations to raise money, the most needy being England’s FA which is trying to pay off £867m Wembley Stadium.
Even the mighty Fabio Capello, England’s new manager, is unlikely to win his battle with the club managers over this one (a number of players including Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have already pulled out of this match).
Far better if the lads just gathered for a kickabout. Mind you, that wouldn’t have helped the unfortunate Walcott.
