Two Qantas jets have just collided while being towed across Melbourne’s Avalon airport in Australia. One of them has only just been repaired after a mid-air explosion in July ripped open a gaping hole in Boeing 747’s fuselage.
The plane was undergoing final maintenance at Avalon, Qantas’s maintenance base for 747s in Australia and was about to return to service.
This is the tenth incident suffered by Qantas planes just this year, and for this one it didn’t even have to get on the runway.
Other problems in 2008 include lost power on the approach to Bangkok, landing gear failing in Australia, an abortive takeoff at Los Angeles and a dramatic plunge over Western Australia which injured 70 passengers.
Airline travellers will want to know just what’s going on with the airline’s maintenance division.
