Here’s a bit of BBC film about an action in Afghanistan in which the first Gurkha, rifleman Yubraj Rai, lost his life.
The Gurkhas have always been the storm troopers for the British Army, despite their shameless treatment by the British government, which tries to deny them pensions and nationality.
Since this action another Gurkha has been killed.
You don’t need to be a military genius to see from this that British troops are winning encounters (or at least holding their own) against the Taliban but losing the war because they can’t hold territory. But even the Russians couldn’t do that in the 1980s with 300,000 troops and a lot less scruples.
Sooner or later the British troops are going to lose a big firefight. Then the process of getting out of Afghanistan will begin.
But should we need to wait that long?
