Former Mirror editor Piers Morgan confessed in his Mail on Sunday sports column today that he was a prat, having called for Arsenal’s long-serving and highly successful manager Arsene Wenger to go after last week’s 3-0 away defeat to Manchester City.
Imagine what he feels like this afternoon after hopeless Wenger and his team went to Stamford Bridge and beat Chelsea 2-1.
Morgan recanted last week’s follies after receiving a barrage of criticism from Arsenal fans who said the wisest words in sport; hang on a minute, give them time.
But sports columnists, especially ones who are brought in to be ‘controversial’, can’t begin their intro with “we’re losing a few games but never mind.” Results must be gained and heads must roll if they are not.
Especially vulnerable are hacks like Morgan who don’t really know much about football (or indeed any other sport) apart from their time as a fan or, in Morgan’s case, munching prawn sandwiches in someone’s executive box at the Emirates.
But they’re required to rush to judgement and end up looking foolish in the process.
This is clearly something Mr Blatherskite can never be accused of.
