A more intriguing choice is Brian Paddick, the gay former top cop who stood unsuccessfully in the Liberal cause for mayor of London. Why do they do it? Well I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here' to give the show its full moniker pays well (the so-called celebs get different rates depending on their eminence) and for people who've fallen out of the public eye it's the prospect of a few weeks' exposure and companionship (they probably don't have many friends). Usually it's the best sport who wins (hardly surprising as the Bushtucker Trials, where you eat live fish and stuff, make 19th century life in an English public school look like a cakewalk). Last year the winner was jolly fat actor Christopher Biggins. Other winners have included writer Carole Thatcher (Mrs T's daughter) and Tony Blackburn (who needs no introduction, alas). Oh, there's also the 71-year old actor who played Mr Sulu in Star Trek. Apparently he likes live fish so he may be the bookies' early favourite. But at his age hosts Ant and Dec had better look after him.
