Caine reveals preferred Italian Job ending

You remember, the bit at the end where the coach carrying the loot from the robbery in Turin is dangling over the pass, when the film ends.

Speaking at an awards do in London star Michael Caine said he suggested that they burn off the petrol to lighten the engine (a bit lengthy for the producers probably) although he also suggested another twist with rival hoods making off with the gold to create the opportunity for a sequel.

It would have been nice to have seen Caine and crew get away with it although that sort of result was frowned upon in 1969.

Actually the original Italian Job wasn’t quite as good as fond recollections have it (although much better than the remake of a few years ago) but it seemed to sum up the time and place pretty well.
