Jamie Oliver: are his campaigning days over?

Jamie Oliver’s mum says the voluble chef may give up campaigning on food issues because of all the criticism he gets.

Jamie, whose work for Sainsbury’s and others has netted him a pot of £25m, first put his campaigning chef’s hat on in his TV series Jamie’s School Dinners, where he criticized the schlock served up by commercial caterers.

This led to schools across the UK offering healthier menus, which almost led to riots in northern town Rotherham where some particularly stupid mothers resorted to pushing chips through the school railings, cheered on by the hacks of course (who probably bought the chips).

Since then he’s joined the crusade against cheap battery-produced poultry and was quoted in Paris Match recently to the effect that the Brits were more interested in getting drunk than eating well (they always have been, in common with many other Northern Europeans).

I think we’re all just a bit fed up of opinionated chefs who seem to think they change our lives because of their ability to persuade otherwise sensible people to pay £100 a head for dinner in their restaurants.

Also today Gordon Ramsey OBE is quoted as saying the food served up to the Queen is ‘shit’ and the ne’er do well responsible should be fired.

To which all you can really say is, “fuck off Gordon.”
