It transpires that some UK restaurants and food outlets have been flogging off loads of South American and African nonsense as British beef.
Actually the Latinos produce some rather good beef (particularly in Argentina) but you get the point.
But the Food Standards Authority, or some such, has been conducting DNA tests on the beef we consume in pubs and restaurants and found that we’re being conned.
Even though most of us, if we happen to eating cottage pie in a Harvester pub for example, wouldn’t know if we were eating beef or lamb or recycled copies of the News of the World.
Does it really matter? After all meat purveyors have been getting away with murder for years, look at Sweeney Todd.
So long as it doesn’t poison you, who cares?
The worrying thing for me is this blind faith in DNA testing. Sure DNA was a big breakthrough in science but all previous breakthroughs in science, for hundreds of years, have been proved to be better than went before but not the whole story. They’ve eventually been superseded by something else. That’s the point of science.
Will DNA be any different?
I’ll have the zebra please, medium rare.
